""Word" documents are "office" documents since word is a part of office.
What is the extension for those documents? What are you trying to open them with?

i have Word installed on my laptop (came with it ) . My laptop also came with a link icon to purchase office , which i have never done . All my documents have always been in Word format (blue icons). One day i switched on my laptop and all my documents have changed into Office documents (orange icons) , this i think has happened during a windows update ? ( my laptop updates automatically).
I now cannot open any word documents as they are associated with Office not Word . Does that make sense ?

If it is MS Word and the issue is it is no longer associated with the files you need to go into control panel>default programs and find the extension for the type of files you have and then "associate" word with that extension
Sorry for the generic instructions but you didnt tell us what OS you have. More info is needed

I think it's windows 7 . It is Microsoft word starter 2010 that i have been using . when i used this the documents were saved as word documents . Now they have all turned into Microsoft office documents. I cannot reassociate them as Microsoft word starter 2010 is not an option ??

I am having the same problem. Tried to open up word documents today and could not. All have changed to orange. I know and checked the date, which was 9/13, that I installed an update to my computer. Were you able to correct this. I am tempted to delete the update, but don't know what that will do for the future. This update has ruined my system. Any help?

I am still waiting for an answer from microsoft ! sounds like we have EXACTLY the same problem . Please let me know if you find a solution.

This is a problem caused by Microsoft. It wasn't until I installed an update on 9/13 that it happened. Microsoft should be responsible for correcting our problems. Otherwise, how do we ever trust to install Microsoft updates in the future. It was fine until a "needed?" to install an update. Any luck? Please let me know. Thanks.

me too! And a mysterious Drive Q showed up. I need to get my work done and I can't get anything finished because it won't even let me open anything because I don't have the office I was just working on the starter version this is totally stressing me out

Just now looked online and saw the suggestion to uninstall the new Office program (which I mentioned I thought of doing in my original posting above). I knew that was when the problem began. I left the original Office program of two years ago as suggested. I uninstalled the new one, shut the computer down and restarted it, and the icons on my desktop came back as before. I tried opening a document and it opened. Back to normal (hopefully).
